Stainless steel 304 and 316 are the most widely used types of stainless steel. Visually it is difficult to distinguish between these two types of steel. So what is the difference between trawling gear in stainless steel 304 and 316?

The biggest difference in the type of steel is the presence of molybdenum in stainless steel 316. Molybdenum is a metallic element that is particularly used to strengthen and harden steel. The most common composition of stainless steel 316 is 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum - whereas stainless steel 304 is usually 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Molybdenum is added to stainless steel 316 to help resist corrosion by chlorides.

Stainless steel 304

Also known to many as A2 stainless steel, it is the most common form of stainless steel in use around the world, mainly due to its excellent corrosion resistance and value. The trawl fishing gear in stainless steel 304 can withstand corrosion from most oxidizing acids. This durability makes 304 easy to sterilize, making it ideal for kitchen and food applications. It is also commonly used in buildings, decorative items, commercial fishing gear and venue furniture.

304 stainless steel does have one weakness: it is susceptible to corrosion from chloride solutions. Chloride ions can create localized areas of corrosion, called 'pitting', which can spread below the protective chrome barrier and damage internal structures. As little as 25 ppm of sodium chloride in the solution will begin to have a corrosive effect.

Stainless steel 316

Also known as marine grade stainless steel or A4 stainless steel, it is known for its higher resistance to corrosion and its superior ability to perform in salt water and marine applications. While it has the same physical properties as 304 and similar utilities, the key difference is that 316 stainless steel incorporates approximately 2-3% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum increases corrosion resistance, particularly to chlorides and other industrial solvents.

316 stainless steel is widely used in chemical processes and high salt environments for its chlorine resistance and, due to its non-reactive nature, is also used in the manufacture of medical surgical instruments and commercial fishing gear for sale.
